I think it was one of those things where after he missed the first few because of work, or for whatever reason, coming to any of the others would draw attention to missteps from before. That’s not how kids think, but it might be how guilty adults...

On the subway, after a man gets up to offer one of the members of an elderly couple a seat, the train shifts forward suddenly and knocks the woman into her husband, who helps to steady her.
The woman looks up at me, smiling: “Gets me every time.” Her husband helps her into her seat, then follows up her statement, again addressing me: “That’s what husbands are for.”
